Polite Society 2023: Robots (2023) tries to combine the powers of artificial intelligence with the improbable search for love in a world where artificial intelligence rules the imagination. This movie, which was based on Robert Sheckley’s short story “The Robot That Looked Like Me,” was directed by Casper Christensen and Anthony Hines and had the potential to be fantastic. Unfortunately, the execution fails more quickly than an Android that is broken. Start with humor—or more accurately, the lack of it. Robots make a valiant effort to be humorous—almost like a broken AI algorithm—but all they get in return is an awkward silence. Not only is the humor unfunny, but it’s unfunny in a way that’s tragically unfortunate or, occasionally, even downright mean. Given their involvement with the “Borat” films, it stands to reason that the writers should have borrowed a page from their own playbook when creating the comedy. Robots unfortunately don’t include that experience. Charles, a charming British man with a British accent, is introduced in the movie because, why not, add an accent that hilariously contrasts with the rest of his American family? This accent-inconsistent disaster is perfectly exemplified by his father Ted and his half-brother Ted Cameron Jr. Audiences find it to be a symphony of vocal incongruity that makes them scratch their heads in perplexity.
