Hypnotic 2023: There’s a lot of blank space in “Hypnotic,” starring Ben Affleck, who stumbles upon a plot of mind-control rogues. Or he starts tripping over them. The reality revolves around our troubled protagonist, whose daughter has gone missing even before the film begins. Now Detective Daniel Rourke alternates between pursuit and escapes from an elusive mind-controlling “hypnotic” played by William Fichtner. Fichtner’s crook is the prime suspect in a strange bank robbery, which baffles Rourke, and gets hold of a Polaroid of his daughter, Minnie. Some mysterious writing on the photo tells Rourke to “find Lew Del Ren”. The wide-angle photography also helps viewers distinguish between “reality” as Rourke knows it and the “Inception”-style delirium that distorts their perspective, often shot with spherical camera lenses. If you look hard enough at “Hypnotic” past the obvious twists and embarrassing dialogue, you can see glimmers of a darker story, though only if you’re a fan of multihyphenate filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. Rodriguez directed, wrote, and edited “Hypnotic” in Austin, Texas, after three production breaks and an insurance lawsuit. Austin was not the first choice for Rodriguez or his production, nor was it their second. Still, it’s hard to imagine how Rodriguez could have shot “Hypnotic” anywhere but Austin, especially because he has filmed most of his projects in Austin during his 30 years as a filmmaker.
